Eddie Cheever won today’s Grand Prix Masters race at a wet Silverstone from sixth place on the grid. The les than perfect conditions lead to an action packed race with Britain’s Derek Warwick and Nigel Mansell falling by the wayside in the early stages.

Mansell spun on his warm-up lap behind the pace car and came immediately back into the pits. Mansell returned to the track a lap down. However, Mansell spun the car again on his out lap and came back into the pits effectively ending his race.

Mansell: “Unfortunately the differential had exploded and I lost drive at the rear. That’s just the reality of motor racing – it’s not an easy sport to do. “Occasionally these failures happen, and today it happened to me.

“I went out again in the middle of the race for one more lap, which I hope the fans enjoyed – I certainly didn’t!”

Derek Warwick was involved in a collision with Rene Arnoux after recovering from a spin with Danner on the opening lap.

Cheever was challenged for much of the race by Eric Van de poele who quickly fought his way from the back of the grid to challenge Cheever but lost out due to a couple of driver errors.
By the end of the race Cheever had over a 16 second lead as he won a near faultless race. “I kept looking in my mirrors thinking ‘I know Nigel’s going to be up here any minute’, but then I saw him sat in the garage on one of the big TV screens (having already retired) and thought ‘Okay, I have a crack at this today!’” joked Cheever.
